Star Control Astrology relies on signs determined from a date of birth. Two basic signs are derived from this information. One sign is derived from the year of birth, the other from the place within the year.
Year Signs are based on thirty-six year cycles, known as Arcs. Each Arc corresponds to a race from the Sentient Milieu, and to an action. This determines the basic response to an unknown situation of the person in question.

Dnyarri Arcs are the unknown transition phase. Dnyarri can be breaking Arcs, or mending Arcs - the latter known as Talking Pet Arcs. It cannot be known what the Arc will be until it has started. Dnyarri Arcs are times of troubles - those born under Dnyarri Arcs will be more likely to undo what others have done before them.
Each Arc is divided into three Cycles, named after allegiances. A person's Cycle determines in which direction the merits and flaws of their Year Sign will lean. Each Cycle lasts twelve years, and has no other purpose than to influence the Year Signs.

Alliance years tend to be productive, idealist times, but plagued by duty and fanaticism. Neutral years tend to produce charming and sophisticated people, but also breed neurosis and anxiety. Those born in Hierarchy years are often good leaders and intelligent, but are similarly forceful and tyrannical.
Under each Cycle are the twelve Year Signs. They last from the very first day of January to the last seconds of December. Each sign has a balance quality based on the source of their energy.
*Above* energy is lightning and fire. It is the outward breath, the essence of expended force. *Above* energy comes from within, and those with *Above* balance are usually independent and enjoy solitude and quiet. It is uncontrolled force, so it is disorganised and simply there for its own sake.
*Below* energy is frost and magnetism. It is the indrawn breath, the essence of withdrawn force. *Below* energy comes from outside, and those with *Below* balance are usually social and enjoy activity in groups with noise and excitement. It is controlled force, and it has rhythm and organisation and purpose.

Within each Year Sign, there are twelve Inner Signs. They fit into a monthly pattern and are ruled by two groups of forces - Ultron Piece and Spatial Element.
The Ultron Piece of an Inner Sign reflects the main attitude of the person toward problems. A reaction to a problem takes one of three forms. Either one thinks and considers, feels and reacts, or acts and performs. An Inner Sign's Ultron Piece represents which of the three the sign is most likely to use.

Spatial Elements correspond to patterns of culture and behaviour. It also refers to essential forces in a cyclic universe.
RealSpace is identified with the force of creation. It is dynamic and constantly in motion. It is ruled by instinctuality.
HyperSpace is identified with the force of order. It is structured and solid. It is ruled by logic.
QuasiSpace is identified with the force of abstraction. It is metaphysical and artistic. It is ruled by philosophy.

So each person is born under an Inner Sign, within a Year Sign, within a Cycle, within an Arc. Thus, the normal statement of SC sign is "Ur-Quan, Alliance Slylandro/Orz".
